Excerpt from "The Real Life of Abraham Lincoln: A
Talk with Mr. Herndon, His Late Law Partner"
… "Mr. Lincoln seldom bought a new book, and seldom
read one. Mr. Lincoln's education was almost entirely a newspaper one. He
was one of the most thorough newspaper readers in America, and for 15 years
before his election to the Presidency subscribed regularly to The Richmond
Enquirer and The Charleston Mercury. He grew slowly, therefore, as public
opinion grew, and as an anti-slavery man was a gradual convert."
